Cahuenga Library Mini Clean-Up, October Edition

It’s the first Saturday of the month, and we’ve reached October already!

A few days ago I got an email from a Tanya Jung, who was the president of a “local community service club” who found out about our monthly mini clean-up events from the Big Sunday volunteer calendar. She said she would bring in “3 to 9 volunteers.” Cool!

Our cleanup this month involved Tanya, two of her friends, both brothers, George Pelham and myself. Though we used four trash bags, neither one was to capacity. In fact, all of the trash we gathered would probably fill just one of the m to capacity. For the second consecutive month, there was no mound of trash in the Lyman Place alley. Only a handful of discarded bottles and cans.

This was the first time we were without the Big Sunday tools, which were picked up sometime last month. They used the custodian’s brooms. In short, we wrapped up half an hour early.

Tanya and the two brothers turned out to be high school students, involved in the local Interact Club, the youth spinoff of the Rotary Club. Tanya is a student at Marlborough School, a private middle and high school in Hancock Park. I asked if they needed any letter or something signed to get credit. They said all they needed to do was note their volunteer hours for the year.

The Cahuenga Library Botanical Gardens Monthly Mini-Cleanup happens on the first Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. at the Cahuenga Branch Library, 4591 Santa Monica Blvd.
